Degas explored this by depicting multiple spaces in his paintings, allowing the viewer to look at several spaces simultaneously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am creating a performance for<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalgallery.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The National Gallery<\/a><\/strong> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">i<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">nspired by the mysterious atmosphere of &nbsp;Degas&#8217; painting &#8211;<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalgallery.org.uk\/paintings\/hilaire-germain-edgar-degas-helene-rouart-in-her-fathers-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <em><strong> H\u00e9l\u00e8ne&nbsp;Rouart in her Father&#8217;s Study<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/span>. &nbsp;A&nbsp;girl stands in her father&#8217;s study, behind his huge chair, surrounded by objects brought from far away lands. &nbsp;She has a distant look in her eyes and gazes out beyond the painting. &nbsp;Behind her are textiles from China, images of Italy, and the shadows of &nbsp;Egyptian statues. Degas plays with scale and space, so that the viewer is unsure what they are looking at &#8211; is it a mirror, a doorway into another room, a reflection, or a corridor?<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/makeandbelieve.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Helen-Rouart-in-her-Fathers-study-degas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/makeandbelieve.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Helen-Rouart-in-her-Fathers-study-degas-223x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/makeandbelieve.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Helen-Rouart-in-her-Fathers-study-degas-223x300.jpg 223w, https:\/\/makeandbelieve.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Helen-Rouart-in-her-Fathers-study-degas.jpg 410w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Rouart in her Father&#8217;s Study &#8211; Degas 1886<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>My performance is called<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><span style=\"color: #333399;\"> <em><strong>&#8216;Inside the Girl inside the Study<\/strong><\/em>&#8216; <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">. <\/span><\/span>It imagines&nbsp;H\u00e9l\u00e8ne&#8217;s dreams and desires, and wonders what Degas was trying to portray? The performance will explore loss and longing, and how objects have a life of their own. It will include stories from China and Europe, and the ancient Egyptian myth of Isis and Osiris. I have been greatly helped by the art historian, <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dictionaryofarthistorians.org\/hofmannw.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Werner Hofmann&#8217;s <\/a><\/strong><\/span>subtle and generous book&nbsp;<strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Degas-Dialogue-Difference-Werner-Hofmann\/dp\/0500093415\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Degas: A Dialogue of Difference<\/a>.<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It really is a privilege to create&nbsp;a performance for this fabulous painting.
